Wal-Mart in the path of desinvesting in Brazil


Wal-Mart Stores Inc is maintaining conversation with investment-buyout funds  (Advent International  Corporation, GP Investments Ltd and Acon Investments LLC) to sell a major stake in its Brazilian operation, said Reuters on Sunday (Jan.21). The companies mentioned did not make comment.

Last week in  newspiece that announced that Wal-Mart would tap Judith McKenna to run its international unit, Bloombert  recalled that Wal-Mart’s overseas business  wasn’t the growth engine that it once was and that the retailer has grappled with economic slowdowns in Brazil and the encroachment of discount retailers in the U.K. Other changes could be coming as the company cuts costs and looks to spend a tax-cut windfall of about $2 billion.

Walmart Brazil began in 1995, and its headquarters are in Sao Paulo. Brands include: BIG, Bompreço, Hiper Bompreço, Magazine, Maxxi, Mercadorama, Nacional, Sam’s Club, Hiper TodoDia, Supermercado TodoDia, TodoDia, Walmart and Walmart Posto.


TodoDia stores are located in several States in Brazil: Alagoas, Bahia, Sergipe, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Parana, Rio Grande do Sul, Maranhao, Santa Catarina and Sao Paulo. These are focused on the C, D and E classes and are located in districts that lie further from the large centers. They offer up to 2,500 products, besides commodities such as financial services. They offer a variety of products, such as food (frozen, dairy, butcher, bakery), hygiene items, cleaning products and Hortifruti housewares. This format is known as the neighborhood store. TodoDia has three different formats: Soft Discount, Discount Supermarke and Discount Compact Hypermarket.

Maxxi Atacado

Maxxi Wholesale stores allow small businesses, retail business and the consumer to buy products in large quantities for resale. Products offered include food items, hygiene and cleaning, as well as products to support retail business, such as electric ovens, refrigerated counters, freezers for beverage display and others. Maxxi stores are located in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceara, Paraiba, Parana, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sao Paulo, Piaui and Sergipe.


With a nearly century-old history, Mercadorama supermarket is one of the best known banners in the state of Parana. Providing customers up to 15,000 items such as grocery, bakery, butcher, food, hygiene and beauty products, and more. Some stores also feature consumer electronics sectors.

Founded in Rio Grande do Sul, National supermarkets are also present in Santa Catarina. The stores offer a variety of perishable products, close to home. The stores seek to offer the lowest prices in the region.



With a history of 80 years in the Brazilian Northeast, the Bompreço supermarket chain is present in all states of the region: Alagoas, Bahia, Ceara, Maranhao, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Piaui, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe. There are about 15,000 items in each store, offering food, toiletries, cleaning, and convenience services. All in one place with agility in service delivery.


Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul know the tradition of BIG. BIG Hypermarkets have up to 65,000 items, including: food, electronics, textiles, housewares, toys, stationery, pet supplies, cleaning products and gardening essentials. Some stores also offer convenience services.

Hiper Bompreco

Hiper Bompreco hypermarkets operate in all states in the Northeast – Alagoas, Bahia, Ceara, Maranhao, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piaui, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe – and offer more than 65,000 items to customer including clothing, footwear, toys, electronics, housewares, grocery, industrial products and more, in addition to convenience services.


Walmart stores are present in the Federal District and the states of Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Parana, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Bahia, Pernambuco and Alagoas. The average store size is more than 80,000 sq. ft., where customers can shop for up to 65,000 products. In addition to food and cleaning products, the Walmart format offers electronics, textiles, books, toys, stationery, pet supplies and accessories, gardening items and more. Also, customers have access to pharmacies, photo centers, restaurants, coffee shops and gas stations. A new supermarket formart was lauched in Parana state in 2017 with a new brand in Brazil: Walmart Supermercado.

Sam’s Club

With the payment of a small annual fee, members have access to a variety of products. More than 5,000 items are offered in each club, including food, cleaning products, clothing, home appliances and electronics. Imported products and exclusive packages are available only to club members.
