Merger and Acquisition in Brazil totalled $61.77 billion in 2017, na increase of around 33 percent from 2016. The transactions were bigger, as number of deals fell to 544 from 615 in the same period. Projections are that M&A in Brazil will further increase in 2018.
In 2017, many of the biggest deals involved firms sold by J&F Investimentos, which needed cash to pay for a huge leniency fine for its role in political dismantled bribery schemes.
The first deals of 2018 have however highlighted a new focus from buyers. Last week, for instance, Chinese firm Didi Chuxing announced it was taking control of Brazilian ride-hailing app 99. Boeing Co is also in tie-up talks with Brazilian airmaker Embraer SA with an eye on its new regional jets and military airlifter.
