Inflation Falls from 0.9% to 0.4%; Price of Basic Basket Decreases in 13 Capitals

The General Price Index – Internal Availability (IGP-DI), measured by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), registered inflation of 0.4% in May.

According to the Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Trade Unions Studies, or Dieese, the price of basic basket decreases in 13 capitals. In May 2019, the cost of the essential foodstuff decreased in 13 capitals, according to the results of the National Survey of the Basic Food Basket, carried out monthly by Diesse, in 17 cities.

The most important falls were observed in Campo Grande (13.92%), Belo Horizonte (7.02%), Goiania (-4.48%) and Rio de Janeiro (-4.39%). The increases occurred in Florianopolis (1.17%), Aracaju (0.86%), Recife (0.20%) and Brasilia (0.06%).

The capital with the most expensive basket was Sao Paulo (R $507.07), followed by Porto Alegre (R $496.13) and Rio de Janeiro (R $492.93). Lowest mean values ​​were observed in Salvador (R $392.97) and Joao Pessoa (R $403.57).

In 12 months, between May 2018 and the same month of 2019, all cities surveyed accumulated between 6.49% in Campo Grande and 24.23% in Recife.

In the first five months of 2019, all the capitals registered accumulated highs, especially Recife (22.69%), Vitoria (20.07%) and Natal (18.94%). The lowest increase was registered in Campo Grande (0.26%).

Based on the most expensive basket, which in May, was that of Sao Paulo, and taking into account the constitutional determination that the minimum wage should be sufficient to meet the expenses of a worker and his family with food, housing, health, education, clothing, hygiene, transportation, leisure, and social security, Diesse estimates monthly the amount of the minimum wage required.

In May 2019, the minimum salary required to maintain a family of four should be R $4,259.90, or 4.27 times the minimum of R $998.00. In April 2019, the minimum floor required corresponding to R $4,385.75, or 4.39 times the minimum in force. As early as May 2018, the required amount was R $3,747.10, or 3.93 times the minimum wage, which was R $954.00.

  • The rate is lower than in April (0.9%). The IGP-DI accumulates 3.75% in the year and 6.93% in 12 months.
  • Fall in the rate from April to May was triggered by the three sub-indices that make up the IGP-DI.
  • Broad Producer Price Index inflation, which measures retail, fell from 1.09% in April to 0.52% in May.
